Long-Distance Trade Networks: Routes and Merchants
The Asante functioned as crucial node in West African trade networks connecting the gold-rich interior to coastal European traders and northern Saharan merchants. Asante merchants (Tuntumfo) traveling to coastal forts negotiated prices, managed gold shipments, and purchased imported goods. Northern trade brought salt, kola nuts, and other goods while connecting to trans-Saharan networks. These trade relationships generated wealth supporting Asante military and government.
