Asantehene Prempeh I in exile (Basel Mission postcard, 1910)
A colonial-era postcard issued by the Basel Mission Book Depot, captioned The Deported King Prempch of Asante and his attendants. Prempeh I was deported to the Seychelles in 1896 and returned to Kumasi in 1924. This is a colonial commercial image of a deposed king, not a portrait made on his own terms, and its framing and caption belong to the people who produced it.
