Gold Production and Regional Trade Networks
The Gold Coast earned its name from legitimate gold deposits in the interior. Asante territory contained significant gold deposits, with miners extracting gold through panning, mining, and trade. Gold production connected to broader West African trade networks extending to the Islamic north and Indian Ocean trade.
Gold Mining Techniques
Asante miners used relatively simple techniques—panning streams, shallow mining, and prospecting—that did not dramatically deplete deposits. Gold production provided wealth but was labor-intensive and required particular knowledge and experience.
Gold Merchants
Specialized merchants accumulated gold from various producers and sold to European traders at Elmina. These merchants controlled supply, managing production rates and prices to maximize profits. The gold trade made certain merchant families extraordinarily wealthy and politically influential.
